Cognates are words that are similar in different languages. Go to this link and read the article. Then scroll down to see some examples of cognates. The first two weeks will be an introduction to the German language and culture. Students will learn similarities and differences between English and German and will find that they already know quite a few German words. They will begin learning numbers, greetings, answers to basic questions, etc. Students' first grade will be to recite the alphabet in German. You should learn the alphabet no later than Monday, August 6th, and be ready to say it for me in class. There are a few links below to practice the German alphabet - be sure to scroll down and click on the links. We will practice saying the alphabet aloud in class often, but practicing at home is an important part of learning a foreign language. Homework 1. Practice the German alphabet sounds at home - be sure to click on the link to listen to an example. You can also watch the video. Connecting the songs to a tune can help some of you to learn the alphabet even faster! You will say the alphabet for me for your first grade Monday, August 6th.
